Evert Johan Breukink

Professor Evert Johan Breukink(Eefjanobtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1994. He currently serves as the Director of the Department of Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and is a top expert in membrane biology and antimicrobial peptides worldwide. Eefjan has been engaged in the study of the structure and mechanism of action of antimicrobial peptides for a long time, and has discovered for the first time in the world the antibacterial mechanism of nisin, the only lactobacillus bacteriocin allowed for use in food.


Education:

1983-1989 Chemistry with a major in Biochemistry at the University of Utrecht.


Professional Experience:


  • 2014-present Honorary Professor of the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Food Microbiotechnology Research of China.
  • 2010-2014: Co-founder, CTO and ad interim CEO (October 2013 - April 2014) of QVQ
  • 2003-present: Associate professor (UHD) at the department Membrane Biochemistry & Biophysics.
  • 2000-2003: Postdoctoral position at the department Biochemistry of membranes, University of Utrecht. 
  • 1999: Postdoctoral position at the Biomembrane Structure Unit of the Department of Biochemistry (Prof. Dr. A. Watts), University of Oxford.
